Chicago forces blind students to pass driver's ed written exam
March 10, 2006 8:40 AM The Associated Press CHICAGO Mayra Ramirez thinks driver's ed is a waste of time.
And in her case, it is. She's blind.
But the 16-year-old and dozens of other visually-impaired sophomores are required to pass a written rules-of-the-road exam to graduate from Chicago schools.
Ramirez says she does the same work that the sighted students do in other classes. But driver's ed -- in her words -- "brought me down, because it reminds me of something I can't do."
Hundreds of Illinois school districts require students to pass the class, although the state only requires districts to offer it.
A spokeswoman for the state Board of Education tells the Chicago Tribune, "It defies logic to require blind students to take this course."
A Chicago Public Schools spokesman says he "can't explain why up to this point no one has raised the issue." He says parents of disabled children can legally ask to change the student's curriculum.

Good thing they don't require them to pass a pilots test. Stupid is as stupid does.

Bob
In our area and that of King county, it is just amazing of the number of dead people voting, I had no idea this is what life after death actually meant.

Hollie
It does sound sort of silly that to require blind students to pass drivers school. But, of course in the manner of direction of our known world, perhaps we as reasonable people of good mind and body, are perhaps becoming a minority.

Just a few days ago on Russian news, they interviewed so many people in Ukraine who found their long-dead relatives on the voter registration lists... One woman was shocked - her grandmother has been dead for more than 20 years, and yet her name was on the list. Even worse, it appeares as if she somehow voted in the presidential election, too!
