The British prime minister arrives in Warsaw today. One of the purposes of his visit is to convince Donald Tusk to support Tony Blair for the president of the EU Council.
Donald Tusk will have a working breakfast with Gordon Brown today. It is the British head of government's first visit to Warsaw. The breakfast's 'menu' includes such items as EU reforms, climate change, peacekeeping cooperation in Afghanistan, and the financial crisis.
But, according to information obtained by Gazeta from Polish government sources, Mr Brown will also try to promote the candidature of Tony Blair, his predecessor, for the position of the permanent president of the EU Council. If the Lisbon Treaty goes into force from end-2009 (it still needs to be ratified by Ireland, Germany, Czech Republic and Poland), an EU president would be needed as early as in 2010.
