Queen's DayKoninginnedag or Queen's Day is a national holiday in the Netherlands, the Netherlands Antilles, and Aruba on 30 April or on 29 April if the 30th is a Sunday. Queen's Day celebrates the birthday of the Queen of the Netherlands and is supposed to be a day of national unity and " togetherness" (Dutch: saamhorigheid). The tradition started on 31 August 1885 on the birthday of Princess Wilhelmina, later Queen Wilhelmina. Since 1949, after the ascension of Queen Juliana, Queen's Day is Queen Juliana's birthday on 30 April. Although Queen Beatrix's birthday is on 31 January, she officially celebrates her birthday on 30 April. Queen's Day is known for its " freemarket" (Dutch: vrijmarkt) all over the country, where everybody is allowed to sell things in the streets. Other activities during Queen's Day are children's games, individual musical performances, and music concerts. The night before Queen's Day is celebrated too in some cities, and this is called Queen's Night (Dutch: Koninginnenacht). The largest celebration of Queen's Day is in Amsterdam, Queen's Night in The Hague and Queen's Dance (Dutch: KoninginneDance) in Rotterdam . During the celebrations as reference to the colours of the House of Orange-Nassau, people dress in the colour orange, which is sometimes called " orange craze" (Dutch: oranjegekte). Every year the Queen visits another province and townsQueensday in Amsterdamlivo.files.wordpress.com/2007/05/queens-day.jpgQueensday in ArnhemI always avoid the city centre of Arnhem during the day on Queensday, because I hate masses! And especially when you get stuck in them and are caugth inbetween drunk people. I love to clean my house today and go outside the city to walk in the woods! Enjoy the nature! But I have to admid I like the end of the day and the evening when there are some nice streetconcerts and the fireworks! Pieter the Partriot (republican)

Queensday disrupted by attack
The Queensday was brutaly disrupted today by a failed attack on the Queen which killed two Dutch people and wounded manny others.
I am sorry for the losses of the two lives and the wounded compatriots!
It is a sad day for the Netherlands.
What should have been a happy day for manny is spoiled by a terror attack of a lunatic. I am sorry for the children who had to witness the people who were crushed by the car. And ofcourse also for their mothers, fathers and other people.
I am not a monarchist, but I don't wish this to the Royal family and the Orangist people who enjoyed seeing their queen.
I really think there is something wrong in this country, Pim Fortuyn 2001, Theo van Gogh 2004 and now this!

Dbkaczor,
Unfortunately there are 4 dead now! And 13 wounded in the hospital of Apeldoorn. Manny of them are heavily wounded! There might die more people.

Pieter
What a deplorable situation to occur on such a happy event! It would so seem that in time of spring, the flowers bloom and the nuts come out..
I was wondering of this occurrence though, if perhaps it was established as an act of intent, or an accident with malfunction of the vehicle?

thats terrible. again, innocent lives lost. but...he is not a terrorist. he is a freedom fighter. This was neither the terrorist nor the freedom fighter. This was just a madman. No connection to Alqueda, Israel or Palestinians.Celebrations of Queen's Day in Apeldoorn took a tragic turn around midday on Thursday. Four people were killed and 13 injured when a car ploughed through a crowd of spectators watching the Queen's Day parade. As the open-topped coach carrying the Royal Family passed, the car broke through the barriers, hitting 23 people and crashing into a monument. The public prosecutor said at a press conference that the driver was acting intentionally, but that there is no terrorist connection. The 38-year old man is reported to have made two earlier attempts to cross safety barriers, driving at a speed of at least 80 kms/hr. The driver was injured in the crash and had to be cut from his vehicle, after which he was arrested and taken away for interrogation. No details have been released about his identity.

Pieter,
This mass murder bringing the light of reality to my general anti-monarchist attitude that I expressed earlier. I of course do not believe in wholesale killing of people. It is a shame that a crazy person was able to do this; I presume it was an individual and not anyone expecting to change the world by their actions.

Folks,
I tend to agree with Jaga's explenation, because it is the closest to the version of the local Dutch authorities I heard on Dutch television today. The driver is a native Dutch, Caucasian guy from a small town South of Apeldoorn under Arnhem.
'He lived a solitairy life' 04-30-09 "A quiet soohted man", is the description of the woman who is his neighbour about the man who crashed into the public in Apeldoorn and killed several people.
The 38 year old suspect worked until recently as a security guard. According to people of his neighbourhood in the town Huissen in the Province of Gelderland he was sacked several months ago.
Neighbours say that he lived an introverted life and had little contacts with people in his neighbourhood.
He gave notice of his rent; today a new renter would enter his appartment.
Research Politie-officers are stil bussy with researching the appartment of the suspect.

Traumatised children
Children who watched the event are traumatised. Several children saw the events from a few meters. They were scared that the guy in the car would go after them in his damaged car, eventhough they saw that he was heavily wounded.
They are scared to go to bed in the evening, to go to their rooms in the evening and that the murderer is under their bed. There were a lot of children with their parents in front of the scene. Children are often the most vulnerable victims of accidents and terror acts, because they don't understand the situation and become scared and afraid.
I hope that these kids don't get a Post traumatic stress syndrome. They saw a lot that day, which is not suitable for their age.
In another accident little children who were behind a fence on the highway saw their parents being killed when a car of a drunken] driver hit their parents and their car who were at the side of the road, because their car broke down.
Their are more children on this world who watched the sudden crual death of their parents, relatives, friends or strangers.
They are marked for life. The sound of bodies which are smashed to the ground (Netherlands) or blown to pieces (Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Israel and Palestine) won't go away.
