Vodka sales in Poland have dropped by one third, according to the Polish Spirit Industry organization.
In the first quarter of 2009, Poles bought 21,1 million litres of spirit products (a 75 percent drop in vodka, specifically), which is almost 30 percent less than a year ago.
The sudden drop in vodka sales is a result of the rise of excise tax by nine percent since the beginning of 2009.
Beer producers also quoted a sales decline. In the first quarter of 2009, the sale of beer in Poland dropped by one tenth in comparison with the same period last year. Unlike high-proof spirits, the fall of demand for beer was not caused by higher excise tax.
“Beer sale in Poland has been decreasing since 2008,” claims Melania Popiel from Carlsberg Polska. She predicts that, in 2009, the demand for beer in Poland might be even five percent lower than in 2008.
In 2008, the spirit industry lost 61 million zlotys (14 million euros) because of currency swap and financial recession. (mg/mmj)

I can't imagine beer or vodka sales declining in Russia, financial crisis or no financial crisis. Even Gorbachov's attempt at prohibition failed miserably.

I gave up drinking. I haven`t for 10 days already. I drink a glass or two of champagne on New Year's Eve, and that's generally it. A glass of vodka on a very rare and special occasion. I hate beer, wine, and other alcoholic drinks. Russia's most popular summertime drink is kvas, which I consider to be totally disgusting: it tastes like bread water, which is actually just what it is!

Pawian! I agree with Karl! Do you have any idea exactly what fish do in water! Wayne Wayne I would well imagine your military equipment was much more advanced then ours. This water business brought to mind some ugly memories. For field purification of water on an individual bases, we had to rely upon chemical purification tablets {it was ugly tasting !} and or, if in possession of, water purification straw. To be used, it was sealed in a weather proof wrap, once unsealed, and if their were nasty stoff on the water surface, this was to be cleared away, the straw then placed above the sediment and below the subsurface, then gently sucked slowly for the chemicals/filter to treat the water and kill the bugs. It was also very vile in taste. Or, risk a alcohol tablet to heat a small container of water for 5 minutes. That often was ugly, for there would be little tiny bugs and wiggles in the water, if you looked closely. I know you are correct with the fish pooping in the water they swim within, for it will stink whilst boiling, or some thing else was buried in the water we wish not to speak of.. Personally, I truly believe the best invention, is the commercial provision of {Bottle Water}}. And,,,J.J. we would wish nothing as drastic of depriving you of your meds Karl
