We had a bunch of uneducated fools write up crap like this and spread it on the internet. Then a bunch of gullibles like you pick it up & spread it further without thinking about any of the points.
It is false. It is a lie. Read the list and you CAN pick out taxes that existed 100 years ago and taxes that existed 150 years ago!
This is also the first time I have seen the claim that the US was the most prosperous country in the world 100 years ago. I would have bet on Britain.
To be fair, I invite you to move the topic over to the jokes section.

I think that for one thing, we expect a lot more service from our governments (local and otherwise) and taxes are the only way to pay for those services. Too often people expect a free ride, and there aint no such thing.
PS. Kai, please calm down...

[ PS. Kai, please calm down... Now Nancy, Nowhere is it writ that we should suffer fools or foolish posts. There is so much garbage circulating on the web that we ahve an obligation to identify it quickly and try to minimize the effects of it. In this case the posting was inaccurate and inflammatory - very good propaganda. Why should we allow our citizenry to be whipped up over exaggerated lies and distortions? Shouldn't we nip it in the bud and talk about things in a civilized manner? I believe what I posted was much more in order than that which inspired the analysis. Kai

One hundred years ago the average age of death was about 55. About 5 % of people owned a bath tub. Most people had no indoor bathroom. Hardly any people had central heating. If you felll across hard times, all the government could for you would be to take your kids away from you! Hospitals compared to today were a joke. People died from the flu!! A long didtance phone call from NY to Denver was 21.00!! No refrigerators no TV no Radio no microwave. Woman were servants with 10 kids or more. Minorities had no rights. I could go on and on and on. My old man said it best when he said. " People who talk about the good old days only remember the good times and not the bad times". He always told me to cut thru the bull crap from the old timers who bragged about the " Good old days"

One more thing to add. On a personel family experiance. My fathers father back in the " good old days" whet out for a pack of cigerettes one evening, and never came back. My grandmother went to city or state to ask for help to put food on the table. Winter was coming up and they needed coal for the upcoming cold months. And here was their answer. " Madam, the only thing we can do is put your children in a county home". That was it. The good old days with no taxes? i don't think so.

I agree with your position, but Rdy is a part of this small family, so I think a reply might have been more educative and less ... well, less blunt.

Of course you are right, Nancy. Diplomacy is the right couse 99% of the time. I wish our Prez had learned that!
Now all I did was call rdywenur "gullible" and nothing more. I left "fools" for the original author. Now we all love to complain and we know things could be better - but given the poisnous atmosphere in America today I feel we all have an obligation to tone down the rant radio that spews hatred, ridicule and intolerance and start presenting our arguments in a reasonable manner.
That quotation that rdy posted is inaccurate and inflamatory and it will magnify the discontent in this country unnecessarily. That is a disservice to our country. It is unpatriotic, if you will.
Rdywenur failed to read and think aboutit firsthand. If it should be posted, then it should be posted in the jokes section, though it makes a poor joke.
Yea, OK, I'll try to behave and not start food fights in the family.

I don't know kaima, we suffer through plenty of your name calling rants here. It's what I've come to expect of the far left however: always the first to throw the stones, always the first to call someone or some idea a derogatory name: then in the same breath, categorize THEM as being "intemperate" or any of the hundreds of other loaded labels you can come up with. If a point or two of rdywenur's list was inaccurate, WHO CARES. Pointing out the offensive entries in civilized manner would certainly have been appropriate. Going on one of your binges may make you feel good, or big, or important, but adds nothing.
You end many of your posts with some self flattering nonsense: "Kaima the patriot, kaima the blah, blah blah". I gotta few suggestions for your endings...
