The courts here in Mexifornia are trying to ban the High School English and Math proficiency exam because it is unconstitutional and discriminatory becase all students don't receive the same level of education. Turns out about 55 % are failing the exam even after five tries to get 50% correct. Most don't speak English What's wrong with this picture? Jim

It would appear that this is a classic case of the tail wagging the dog. Some where, some place in time. These law makers have lost the sense of reality.
The reality is they (law makers) are doing an injustice to these children and the public alike. This is the failure to insure that all children know and understand the national language, it is not Spanish, French, Russian, German, it is English.
One of the first requirement that must be enforced with immigration, is the requirement to know the national language.
For to maintain and strengthen any society, there must be a common language. Other wise, it is just another tower of babble.

Charles,
The nineth circuit and the ACLU are the tail in Mexifornia. Not to be able to test what children know is a disservice to them. And many use the excuse the test if given in English. But remember most of our ballots here in this state are in Spanish, Chinese etc. Shooting ones own foot comes to mind.

Here is a comparison about how math has changed. Maybe is should be in the Joke section.
Teaching Math In 1950
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price. What is his profit?
Teaching Math In 1960
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price, or $80. What is his profit?
Teaching Math In 1970
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80. Did he make a profit?
Teaching Math In 1980
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80 and his profit is $20. Your assignment: Underline the number 20.
Teaching Math In 1990
A logger cuts down a beautiful forest because he is selfish and inconsiderate and cares nothing for the habitat of animals or the preservation of our woodlands. He does this so he can make a profit of $20. What do you think of this way of making a living? Topic for class participation after answering the question: How did the birds and squirrels feel as the logger cut down their homes? (There are no wrong answers.)
Teaching Math In 2006
Un ranchero vende una carretera de maderapara $100. El cuesto de la produccion era $80. Cuantos tortillas se puede comprar?

Well Jim today the verdict was printed about a recent incident here in Rochester and if it ain't a kick in the pants with the results. I'm sorry but I don't agree with the judges at all. They said that these people were talking in English and when someone came by they would jump into Hispanic. Where I come from that is called being rude. And I still think they should speak English. Where I work there have been quite a few Hispanic hired recently and it is becoming more and more noticable of changes ever so subtle and not to the good. They show no respect and and act like street people with no class. I should give them a run for their money and start to speak Polish in their presence. I know that this is America and in reality the courts are going by the law but I'm sure everyone feels more like I do . I just don't appreciate them so much in my face. www.democratandchronicle.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060510/NEWS01/605100309&SearchID=73244269886542

I know where your coming from Rdywenur, however i came fom a Polish section of town where Polish was spoken as a first language by many. I'm sure there were many people who thought that was rude. My grandparents actually spoke very little english and felt more comfortable speaking polish to the grocer, baker or the candlestick maker for that matter. i think its important that people learn English for their own sake if anything ) but personelly i never minded people speaking a foriegn language in front of me. In one sense i think its part os Americana. My 87 year old mother thinks its horrible that local hispanics speak Spanish around town. I have to reminder her that her parents could not speak English and had no desire to learn.

Thanks for the examples. Boy, we have a complete new generation that will not be able to spell,"stupid".
Actually, for every situation, there lays the opportunity. Let this be all so, for then, competition will be more complete and much more simpler in the work place.
I am not knowledgeable of the minimum wage level in your area. But, each employer has the right to hire their own employees. Beginning at a cut off wage level, if a requirement is enforced of all potential employees be required of drug testing and, polygraph examination. This requirement in self, eliminates many applicants.
With the lock out of higher pay level pay jobs, in self, regulates these folks into lower paying minimum work.
I have though, noticed an increase of Latin people in our area this year. I have no idea what they do for work. In the large parking lots of lumber retail businesses as of Home Depot, large groups of Mexican types are waiting to be picked by contractors for day work. If you stay back and observe the situation. It is very noticeable of medium well dressed individuals seated in medium value autos waiting these are the spotters. Also of a precess of leveling of the Mexican guys by nationality and education, yes. I know, because of personal interactive communication with individuals staying aside of the larger groups. These people staying by choice with staying apart do not want to be associated with the unwashed and uncouth types. When I have asked out of curiosity, that is exactly the reason on their wishes not to be commonly identified with the larger group.
People are interesting, with out questions, there will be no answers.

Jim Although I'm not a huge fan of these standardized state-mandated exams (too many schools wind up turning into test-prep centers to merely boost these scores, instead of giving kids a proper, broad-based education), this is insane, not to mention just disturbing, on so many levels.
