Rabie, Your reaction is quite normal! There are many stories about reactions when the Aurora Boreolis or Northern Lights reach southern areas. In the far north we live with it all the time and they have been researched for decades so to us they are just a wonderful work of God. For the scientific background I go to the Geophysical Institute, but to show you what I am accustomed to seeing, try www.geo.mtu.edu/weather/aurora/images/aurora/jan.curtis/Where it is normally visible www.gedds.alaska.edu/AuroraForecast/The University in Fairbanks had or has a program for shooting up rockets into the atmosphere to initiate the northern lights. Some were barium filled rockets. The northern lights occur in the magnetosphere above where airplanes can fly and below where satellites can orbit, so rockets are about the only way to get to that altitude. I expect the volcanic dust and the electrical charge they carry go high into the atmosphere and affect the magnetic field around the earth, causing the lights. wmatem.eis.uva.es/~marsan/discover/auroras/aurora2.jpg
