kabanosy is so delicious!Germany is trying to prevent Poland from registering the kabanosy sausage as an EU protected local product, claiming this would violate the rights of Rhineland sausage producers. Poland’s Agriculture Ministry applied for regional status of the thin, chewy kabanosy sausage last January but the application was blocked by authorities in Berlin, who point out that they have a similar sausage. The Agricultural Ministry along with the Polish Meat Association assures that a Traditional Speciality Guaranteed label, granted to food produced from traditional raw materials and characterized by a traditional composition or method of production, would allow Germans to produce sausages under the same name. It is just a way of distinguishing kabanosy produced according to an EU registered recipe, says Warsaw. Mozarella, for example, has been registered by Italians but the cheese is also produced in other countries, including Poland. The Polish meat industry hopes that Germany will eventually drop its kabanosy veto, pointing out that the Czech Republic and Austria, which initially opposed kabanosy becoming an EU trademark, have now consented. How about declaring the EU as an unprotected product and ban it?
