New Year's Eve Attacks: Dozens of Women Sexually Assaulted in CologneSeveral women have complained of being sexually harassed during New Year's festivities in Cologne.Dozens of women celebrating New Year's Eve in Cologne have said they were the victims of sexual assault. With a group of men with North African and Middle Eastern appearances under suspicion, the incident threatens to augment growing concern over Germany's refugee policies.German politicians and officials are voicing concern on Tuesday over reports that dozens of women were harassed and groped in the heart of Cologne on New Year's Eve by a large group of men on the crowded square in front of the city's main train station. According to police, many also had personal items stolen and fireworks were also fired into the crowd of revelers. According to police, some 90 complaints had been filed by Tuesday morning, with witnesses saying that the perpetrators were young men between 15 and 35 years old and appeared to have migrant backgrounds. " We will not tolerate such cowardly and abhorrent attacks," said German Justice Minister Heiko Maas on Tuesday. " This is apparently an entirely new dimension of organized crime." All of those involved, Maas demanded, must be " identified and made accountable." At a press conference on Monday evening, Cologne's police chief, Wolfgang Albers, said that a quarter of the complaints made were related to sexual harassment or groping, with many others pertaining to theft of purses, wallets and mobile phones. He said that smaller groups of men repeatedly emerged from a crowd of about 1,000 young men to surround women, harass them and steal from them. According to the Cologne daily Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger, many of the presumed perpetrators are suspected of being from a large group of men that has attracted the attention of police in the past several months. Prior to New Year's Eve, the group had been involved in theft and petty crimes in Cologne nightlife districts. " The entire square was full of almost exclusively men with just a few fearful women among them being stared at," says Anne, a 27-year-old who was at the scene on New Year's Eve and who spoke to SPIEGEL ONLINE. " I can hardly describe it. I felt very uncomfortable." She says that she was groped soon after arriving to the square. Careful CalibrationThe attacks occur at a time when sentiment toward Muslims and foreigners in Germany appears to be becoming increasingly antagonistic. Even as the numbers of refugees arriving in Germany has slowed with the onset of cold weather, those critical of Chancellor Angela Merkel's policy of welcoming refugees fleeing war and violence have become more vocal. Indeed, groups critical of Islam and foreigners have been quick to seek to appropriate the events in Cologne for their own purposes. Pegida, for example, the Islamophobic movement that got its start in Dresden, has posted several comments about the Cologne attacks on its numerous Facebook sites, with supporters responding in a predictably offensive manner. Many German politicians commenting on Tuesday about the events in Cologne have been careful to calibrate their responses so as to avoid playing into the hands of right-wing Islamophobes. " We will not tolerate organized groups of men from North Africa that debase defenseless women with brazen sexual attacks," said Ralf Jäger, interior minister of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. He added, however, that the authorities will do everything in their power to ensure that such attacks are not repeated. " We owe that to women as well as to those North African refugees who want to live peacefully among us." Germany's integration commissioner, Aydan Özoguz, demanded a rapid investigation "because on the one hand, the women need clarity and on the other, refugees and foreigners are quickly becoming the focus of broad suspicion." Despite such urgings, however, it will likely take some time before any of the perpetrators can be identified. Footage from surveillance cameras mounted at the entrance to the Cologne station will certainly help, but the number of people on the square combined with darkness and the not entirely reliable memories of many of those partying at the site will make the process dramatically more difficult, say officials. Investigators are placing their initial focus on a group of men from North Africa who have perpetrated a number of petty thefts on the streets of Cologne in recent months. In 2014, Detective Chief Superintendent Günther Korn told SPIEGEL TV that " in Cologne we have 12,000 such incidents each year. That is 5,000 more than in 2007." Ulf Küch, police chief in the city of Braunschweig, which has also suffered at the hands of small-time criminals from migrant backgrounds, told SPIEGEL ONLINE in November that the vast majority of migrants from the region are law-abiding. " We have found that very few immigrants commit crimes, but those who do commit a number of crimes," says Küch. Official statistics would seem to indicate that his impression is right. A study released in November by the German Federal Criminal Police Office on crime committed by refugees shows that the number of offenses perpetrated by migrants is rising much more slowly than the number of migrants coming to Germany. cgh/with reporting by Jörg Diehl and Kendra Stenzel

Dear friends,
I think that in the Netherlands or Denmark this wouldn't be possible. Because husnands, boyfriends, fathers, brothers, uncles, friends, colleagues, neighbours and even strangers wouldn't accept it today. Maybe it was different a few years ago, but today people don't take such a thing lightly. It is interesting that the German police says that these aren't refugees. Therefor these men must be Moroccan, Turkish and African migrants. We have had some problems with these groups, but not on these scale.
I hope that leaders and people from these ethnic groups will speak out against these men. Maybe these people were German Turkish and Arab German gangs. I read earlier about territorial rivaly between Turkish and Arab gangsters in Cologne. It is clear in this case that native European German women are the victim of Middle-eastern, Turkish and African men. This is organised. Who are behind this terrible treatment and harassment of German women and girls?
Do you know more Karl. It was large news in Dutch newspapers and tv chanals.
Cheers, Pieter

Pieter, even in 80s Cologne's train station was a dangerous place. I was travelling through Germany in 1984 on a student ticket and I felt safe everywhere except the Cologne. I was so poor then, that I could just afford the train ticker and visited my family's friends from town to town. I was still young and brave to do so. Just like you I would not exaggerate the new immigrants influence, just the old rivalries between Turks and others.

Dear Jaga,
In this case it is different. The large group of men were Arab looking foreigners and the victims were German women. It did not only took place in Cologne, but in other German cities/towns too. This is not an is isolated incident. And that large group of men were foreign migrants. It is a fact that I have native European girlfriends (Dutch women) who have negative experiences with migrant Muslim men on the streets, in public transportation, on bikelanes, and etc. And these are not xenophobic, racists, nationalist or ultra-rightwing women. They are open minded, liberal and multi-cultural.
They dress decently and they want to be respected as women, citizens of a European nation and they have a right to be protected against sexism, abuse and sexual assaults. This has to stop and I hope that the German authorities will take the necassery steps. If not these women will have to stay at home in the evenings and at night. The women and girls will not have a social life of going out, dancing, Yoga lessons in the evening, or meeting friends or partners in a pub, restaurant, theatre or cinema. I agree with the blond German women in the video of RT.
We don't need xenophobia and racism, but the German authorities have to examine who did this and persecute the perpetrators. In that way they can protect both German and migrant women. We are all equal for the law in Europe, and we are equal as human beings. Women and girls have as much rights as men to be in public spaces. And they have the right to have a life free of sexism, verbal and physical abuse and being chased by primitive men. Men have to control themselves, to behave themselves and to be gentlemen. How do these men treat their mothers, sisters, female cousins, aunts, grandmothers and nieces?
Cheers, Pieter

Pieter Thank you for introducing this subject, for there exist a high degree of failures in policy of our leadership {German} and down to street level with Police. This is as expected as a result of multiculturalism. We have an large influx of thugs and criminals that are taking advantage of European life built upon cultural safety. The female victims are the weakest and thusly most vulnerable to sex crimes at the mercy of these thugs. These Islamic thugs are accustomed to a life of strict control, and when let loose in a western population, then let loose their welms upon the weakest segment of population and this is the female sex. It is for this reason to keep strict segregation in the various holding areas with very tight control. This situation is not only deplorable, but absolutely not necessary. For this was forecast in advance by both police and departments of intelligence but evidently ignored by our departments of authority. Withen the confines of these various acts of violence against women, was, and is, absolutely unnecessary and is a gross failure of police prevention and intervention. For withen these various crowds of Islamic male dominance should have been both uniformed police presence withen the crowd, and, plain cloths officers. In this manner, to detect, protect and for emmediate arrest of potential and on site offenders. This is the primary duty of police presence, is to provide protection to and for the public, and, protection of property. www.infowars.com/feminists-mute-on-muslim-rape-epidemic-sweeping-europe/We do not need both our political and civil authority sticking their heads in the sand and saying," Oh dear me,,these poor poor people to be saved by us from their terrible lands". The time for police action{s} is now, at present, without hesitation. For how difficult is it for quick identification of an Islamic in an unlawful act? There is inplaced, the various laws for tools for proper detection/ enforcement/ and arrest of various crimes, then for fair and proper adjudication, if used. Simular is the Islamic issue in Denmark, with differences inplaced. For one, there was not an open invitation for multiply thousands of unchecked Islamics from the various areas of conflict primarly in Syria and surrounding states. But controls and checks conducted. For Denmark is very much the smaller then Sweden and Germany, as thusly so, less ability of obsorbtion of such populations. The saving aspect is most of the fleeing refugees/immigrants, are passing through Denmark for Norway and/or Sweden. Perhaps as of the above, is a prime reason my self work only in the foreign lands.

Thank you for your reply Karl. I agree with you that the state has a duty to protect the women, because they are citizens of Germany, German voters, German tax payers, German mothers, German daughters, German employee's and for the simple reason they are human beings. Yes, there should be undercover agents in the crowds, just like there are undercover agents in far right and far left demonstrations. The German police has migrant police officers. They could check the crowd and not load suspicion on themselves.
The guilty ones must be tracked down and punished. In the Future such things should not happen again. The German authorities and the German police must be better prepared and protect German women and visiting foreign female visitors. (Tourists, expats, business people, exchange students and excetera).
Cheers, Pieter
