Oh my God !!!!!!!!!!! I have been out of touch for a few days. I just looked at the pictures of the various foods. My mouth is watering. My grandmother made the best platzki (crepes) and potato pancakes. PLATZKI (do you love my Polish spelling?)
There is a Polish Deli in the next town where I frequent. At Christmas time I buy a cake from them which TO ME is part cheesecake and part "mach" (moonseed). It is fantastic. Does anyone have a recipe for something comparable to this?
My grandmother made a cake which was like raisin bread dough which she spread out and then smeared with "mach" (moonseed). I cannot make breads. I tried. I cannot do it. But her mach cake was out of this world. My grandfather used to sit on the back porch and grind fresh moonseed and from this my grandmother made a paste with white raisins and honey which was spread on the dough. Then she rolled it. I have never in my life found anyone who could duplicate it. NOT EVEN MY DAD.
She also made the same dough and spread it with sweetened Farmer's cheese....MMMMMMMMMMMMMM good.

John, We called it "moonseed", but the correct term is "poppy seed". And my grandmother called poppyseed...mach.......as in mach cake or poppy seed cake. What is the correct way to spell it? I have tried the commercial prepared poppyseed in a can. YUCK! Sure not like my "Bushie's" !

Judy, I have never heard (mak) poppyseed called moonseed. My mom made the same poppyseed roll that your grandmother made but I don't think she used raisins and prepared seeds.

My grandmother used to buy packages of hard poppy seeds and my grandfather used to sit on the back porch and grind them with something that looked like a sausage grinder. It probably was a sausage grinder. Grinding the seeds made a mushy paste and "Bushie" used to add the white raisins and honey and use that to spread over the dough before she rolled it. This is all true if my memory serves me correctly. And yes, all my life it was called Mak Cake. That is the only thing I know it as. It seems to me that my mother was the one who called it "moon seed".
But even better than the mak was the cheese cake. The same dough filled with a sweetened Farmer's cheese. Boy, was that good.
I remember her making home made noodles. The big sheets of rolled kluski were always draped over the kitchen chairs on dish towels. One day my cousin and I hid them from my grandmother and we placed all of them under the bed blankets on the bed. Boy, did we get into trouble for that one ! She searched the house "hi and low" for those kluski.

The only difference is that today my wife, when she feels like making a poppyseed cake, uses an electric grinder.

This means Gołąbki Rubbery Containers For Those Who Don`t Like Boiled Cabbage.
