Your fruits and veggies look a lot better than what we have here. When I was in Poland my aunt had some black grapes the size of a plum (that's what I thought they were they were so huge) I think it must be the farmers there pick fruit when it should be picked and no chemicals (ours is picked to soon for shipping and then they are gassed in the trucks to ripen...results tasteless yuk) Do I see gooseberries (3rd up)

Judy, I found a recipe recently I had saved for poppyseed or walnut filled roll from Yankee Magazine. Let me know if interested I will email it to you.
Yes, I would love to have the recipe. Thank you. Please send it to me. Do you still have dad's address?

Yes, there are two kinds of gooseberry in the photos: green and purple.

Some people prefer buying at open air markets because they claim the food there is less contaminated with fertilizers etc. But I heard such stories that I don`t believe anybody today. To recommend this food I would have to go to the farmer`s place and see how he/she grows it. Of course the price shown on cardboards is in Polish currency. What other currency do you think Poles should use in their country? Dollars? hahahaha Come on, we are not so Americanised yet. I make wine from fruit other than grapes. My doctor advised me to eat a lot of cherries to stay healthy so I usually use them for my wine. Last year black currant was cheap so I bought some too. This year fruit are quite expensive due to freezing temeperatures in May.

Jerzy, I did not realize that you can solve hieroglyphic writings Of course I can, with a litltle help of my pocket hieroglyphic-English-Polish dictionary. Can`t you? Too bad. We had a few nice discussions. Hey, it`s unfair that you ban a good poster! Don`t behave like Eric when he was an admin in NRF! Of course, I knew it. He told me everything in his pidgeon English.

The Fresh Food Market pictures were a joy to see! All the varieties one could pick & choose from. I would be more inclined to buy from this market that say from Wal-Mart. Our local food stores do not carry the top quality that a farmer's market would carry. The closest thing to a farmer's market would be in Dallas-70 miles away. Their selections of items are limited too. The further south you go in Texas-you can run into "Check"(forgive the spelling) and German communities. Some of the shops in these communities, have the authentic foods. The German sausages are the closet thing I have found to Kelbasa.
In our food shopping, the produce we buy does not stay as fresh as one would like despite refrigeration. I have that the growers pick their fruits & vegies before they are fully ripe, while they ripen in transit and then arrive at the food store. Then you have only a few days to use it or it turns rotten. It's terrible to spend good money only to have your produce go rotten.
The pictures of the pierogi's-oh my!!! I made some of them a few years ago, but I don't think they turned out as well as they should have. Perhaps I should try again, but only make a small amount. I do make a mean pot of "gwumpkie" or stuffed cabbage. If there are leftovers, I make a "gwumpkie" soup for the next day.
I get hankerings for cabbage-just boiled is okay with me, but when I have the smoked bacon, onion and some sausage-I throw all this together in a large pan and bake. Kapusta!-my husband just shakes his head.
I have yet to make Babka bread or Chrust-those are on my "to-do" list.
Is there any one or two particular food items that are traditionally served at Christmas time?

Our local food stores do not carry the top quality that a farmer's market would carry. There are such food markets all over Poland, including major cities too. It may signify certain backwardness compared to the USA but I don`t mind..... hahahahaha I am not sure. I have never seen German sausage except for frankfurters - in Poland they are called parówki. Frankly - nothing special. Sad reality which happens here is Poland too. We often go to a hypermarket and on most occasions the food supposed to be sold fresh isn`t fresh.. Don`t worry! Many Polish wives and housewives can`t make pierogis either... That`s interesting... Gołąbki soup.....hmmm... Gołąbki soup??? So do I. Boiled cabbage stinks! You will have to wait for Christmas time!

Is there any one or two particular food items that are traditionally served at Christmas time? Joyce I was intent upon keep of my silence in as much as this is a Polish forum. But, to say,and then to do, are of a very different situation. I gather so, that you are living in the area of Texas. I was not aware until this past year, that you have some German ethnic families. {I had learnt of Jaga's in-law relatives are German} I must say though, sauage is very European across our land. In Germany, Sausage is {Wurst}and{Würstchen}or little sausage. For every area, is every variety of Wurst. There are of a multitude of varieties. The North {us} we have Rohwurst-Kochwuerste-Blutwurst-Thuerigner-Rostwurst-Suelzwurst-Leberwurst-Bruehwurst-Fleischwurst-Bierschinken-Wiener Wurstchen-Cervelat-Katenrauchwurst-Mettwurst and so on. Sulzwurst is made of pork head or portions of leg {schwein} as a person, I have not particularly like it. North Germany and Dänemark {I grew up in war time and post war in Dänemark} we were blessed with this all in natural foods of both vegetable, dairy and farming animals. One of my jobs was assisting with the making of our several varieties of Cheeze {Käse}der Kottage {HüttenKäse}[this was ugly in smell whilst making] and then of some of the wurst. For of the Wurst, the animal must be after butcher, boned out and the meat ground with added ingredients mixed in. The leavings, we used for soup mixed with vegetables of the season. For the casing {for wurst} we used the upper intestine of the animal after butcher. These were cleaned and rinsed for then to be used. It is only ugly if one is not used to eating. A very delicious typen of wurst is: Teewurst, it is a very finely minced mix of pork and beef packed in small short casing. It is very delicious in both a sandwich or on a morning toast with coffee. In our climate, all things that are good to eat, are very delicious. And to run out of fish, would inself have the meaning of: The see has dried and no longer exist. Charles
