How about a recipe for a vegetable salad. My cousin made one that had small potaotes cut up, carrots, peas, and I think cucumbers and other things and had a dressing. Not sure if it was oil and vinegar or a mayo base but it was delicious and although I have asked for the clarification on the dressing get no response. Is anyone familiar with this and do you hae a recipe.

Just recently I asked my mom if she remembers ever making a soup she made when I was real young. I remember it was like a clear broth and it was very sour. I remember enjoying it and as I got older would search for this soup. Anyone here think it is familiar. My mom does not remember much of the stuff she cooked when I was young. I tell her it is because she started to cook American foods. She does not even remember paluski (a sort of kluski or macaroni whish she rolled into a rope and then cut at an angle which made them look like diamonds.

My aunt in Poland was a fantastic cook. (my mom is not but makes the best golumbki and pierogis, kapusta and borscht) From what I saw her making and serving here in the US we would call her a gourmet. She made everything from scratch too. Not sure if it was for us as we were her guests. Much as I tried to tell her not to fuss it fell on deaf ears. (and they would not let us take them out to dinner) I had to start being very careful what I said so that they would not do eveything I talked about. They were so gracious above and beyond. I like to collect recipes that are to me the everyday type foods one would eat, whether it be Polish or Italian or whatever. I bouoght a cookbook from St Stan's a Polish church and it said Polish cookbook and all the recipes were American that you would find in Betty Crocker ...how disappointing was that. (I chalked it up as a donation to the church)

Chris, I am so glad you like this section! I am working on bigos recipe - as for what moderators do - they just watch the board more frequently than the visitors - at least 1-2 per day if possible. Post some messages and polls, make sure that everybody who have a question would have a reply. You also will have privileges like being able to edit the posts - in case - somebody writes something non-ethical, which I hope would never be a case

Bigos great food and great as leftovers, I use 1 large jar of sauerkraut drained, 1 large head of cabbage, 4 cups bullion start cooking it. Add any leftover meat you have, thow in an onion and some Polish dried mushrooms. I add a little garlic. After cooking awhile I have a handfull of flour and a dash of sugar to thicken it all up. Serve with rye bread and butter.

The idea with Bigos as Jim's recipe shows is to use whatever is realistically at hand and let it simmer. The background or binder should, of course, be sauerkraut. I, personally, think a crock pot (slow-cooker) or a pot on a wood stove work the best. And of course, the flavors meld - come together - if refrigerated for a day or two. If the people in your home will let you do that The rye bread is absolutely a requirement GM

Thanks Nancy..I have been to that site before. (More than likely all of them) The salad there is similar but not the one. I have a bad problem with my cousins. None of them are able to write in English and not sure if they even do the internet. Their children are learning it and I communicate with one via email but it is on a touch and go basis. I never get answers to my direct questions. I wish it were different but it is not. One problem is time frame for instant messaging but not emails. When I was there in 98 I felt a huge resistance to English and Americans. I don' see that on this board with our members from Poland. Maybe they can add some insite to this for me.
