Please, forgive me that I did not post anything yesterday but I could not access the internet for more than a minute through the day. My service provider changed and there is even a problem to get somebody from technical support to answer. It is 4 am and finally.... I am online. Probably tomorrow it would be the same

Jaga,
My server was done for a few days, and the service man, was out to my home, and put in new cable, inside and out, and all looks good now. But it was hard without, since I use it for my work.

Michael,
one good thing. I was able to read through the whole book yesterday since I did not spend all my time on the internet. Today it miracoulously works.

I also had trouble getting through to the service dept. and when I finally did, they wouldn't accept my credit card, which was the same one I pay them on every month! Finally, in desperation, I called the billing dept and told them I had to cancel my service, then they paid attention. They told me it was a system wide, huge problem and for my trouble they are giving me a month's free service, plus a month's free access to the technical support line. Of course, my service didn't resume until Jan. 25th, but at least I've got the month of free service! Jeanne

Jeanne,
good deal. we had Teton wireless but they were bought up by something else. Anyway, it seems that they set up something right on Friday night because I have a service since.
we are also on the brink of ending their service.

;D I was going to put this in a new topic but, I guess you have started a conversation. I too was having problems with the ISP that i now have. The ISPs' web site has gone downhill and is now on the level of a 2 yr. old, the ISP was going to increase the rates and reduce the content; ?my fix? I am now going to go high speed internet with the cable provider in my area. The fee is only a few dollars more than what my present carrier is now going to charge. I won't have the super-speed level but what I will get is better than what I have now A couple of things I can say is that I won't be cut-off, like now and I won't hear my wife say "get off the internet, I want to use the phone!" Well, the plunge might well be worth it because I will be able to download a lot faster than before. By the way, my son-in-law came back from Afghanstan and he gave me a book and pen from a Polish soldier. The name of the book is "Polska Zbrojno" "Ten centuries of the Polish Armed Forces. The cover has a rendering of a Winged Hussar. The introduction is by Wojciech Kalwat. The book starts with The beginnings of the State and the Piast Dynasty. This does look like some good reading and you know where I will be in my spare minutes. ;D ;D

Bob,
We have had dial up with several companies, then satellite, which we thought would be great...... but too often affected by the weather, and now.... finally available in our area... cable!!! I can tell you that for us it's by far the best. Of course, I live in the boondocks, so not a lot to choose from. But let me know how you like it. I find ours to be very fast.

;D Gen3. I live in an almost metro area but have no Broad Band in my neighborhood from the phone companies. I looked into satellite but it was just too expensive and like you mentioned, there was the weather problem. I was under the impression that service from the cable company would be expensive but I was wrong. There is the initial cost of setting up the connect but after that, the monthly fees are low or competative with the dial-up fees that I now Pay. One of my daughters told me that the phone company was setting up a FIOS network in her neighborhood but the monthly fees for service was more than double the cost of the cable company. ;D

And if they do how do they compare?

I have had dial up with one server that I would never go back to again. They had too many customers and not enough lines-for they would keep on bumping people off line., They said it was your computer problem. I don't think so... Then we had another dial up server that was okay-but the slowness-was like a snail, even tho I lived in town and less than 3 miles away from the server. There was cable available, but the cable company had some problems too-like during thunderstorms-their entire service would go off line. Husband didn't want that. When DSL became affordable to home owners, that's when I decided to pay for the service. I like the DSL because of the downloading speed (Microsoft patches/fixes-some of them are pretty big). We have dish tv-and the only thing I don't like about that is during our rainy season. The rain interrupts the signal alot. Hopefully modern technology can one day improve the signal reception when it rains. There are a few things they don't tell you when you sign up for the service.

Joyce, The reason you loose reception during the rainy season is raindrops. Yes, raindrops. You have to know antenna technology to fully comprehend it but it is for this reason: When it is raining, and especially if it is somewhat intense, the raindrops stretch out a bit as they fall. They stretch out to be 1/4 wavelength of their antenna requirements and this absorbs the signal and consequently no video and sound.

Guys,
I do not have any internet connection again. I am just sitting at my friend's house after some exercise. We had a strong wind which partly justifies my problems. Still I am really annoyed, after two days (Saturday and Sunday) where I did not have any problems I called the company today and it seems that nothing was done.

After having internet and being involved like you are here it has to be dreadfully frustrating. I know we rely on the internet for 99% of our business. Sometimes I forget how life was before internet.... you may not, you are much younger than I am. I hope you are up and in cyber space soon and all will be well with the world wide web! Mary

I am very frustrated.... I never realized how dependent we will be on the internet! Somebody may be coming to my home tomorrow and check what is wrong. It seems that this service is still much cheaper that the competitors.
I also have problems with my right leg again. This time is seems to be swollen above the knee, so I am going to the doctor tomorrow. Hopefully I will go through some regular treatment now.

What you do now will affect the rest of your life. I abused my body when younger, working like a man, and now I am paying for it with a lot of arthritis and pain. As far as the internet, sometimes it pays to get something a little more expensive if you get much better service. Ask around to the people in your area. I would avoid satellite and dial-up, other than that it really depends on what you have available in your area, and what kind of service you can get. To me, there's nothing worse than getting transfered to 6 different people, wasting a lot of time, and then still getting nowhere. I wish you luck, and hope you are back on line steady soon. Mary
