Tim,
I think that goes back to the 1770's when we Brits beat us Brits and created Americans! But the divergence has not been so bad. Over the last couple of centuries we have held together because we have more in common than we have differences. Two world wars and many Police actions where we have liberated subsequently ungrateful countries have proved that.

Dear Members of the Polish American Congress and Polonia:
Today I received a personal telephone call from Pennsylvania Senator Arlen Specter regarding the Polish jokes he delivered during a luncheon in New York City. Senator Specter told me that he regrets these inappropriate statements referencing the Polish people and asked that I offer his sincere apology to the Polish American community. Senator Specter himself traces his family history to Eastern Europe. He said he understands that the remarks were unnecessary and offensive and that this incident brings about another opportunity for all Americans to be more conscience and respectful of the accomplishments which continue to be made by all groups that make up the great ethnic mosaic of America.
During my conversation with Senator Specter, he said that he prepared an apology letter and asked that I forward this letter to all members of the Polish American community and that they forward it to family members and friends.

Pawian I am not Polish, but I would be embarrassed and some what angry for those remarks from a man of such responsibility, as of Mr. Arlen Spector. It would appear for at least on the surface. The man is over secure with assumed protection by virtue of position and time in office. Karl Yah sure, and and you believe in Santa Klaus? This man is so sorry, for only that he was caught. Yes, yhou betchea... You people are so simple. Karl Hmm.... Karl, we are not simple. Yes, of course, the man is shrewd as a politician, and realises the political losses will be bigger than gains from joke telling if he doesn`t apologise. But I believe that the very fact he feels bound to apologise means a lot. It will teach him a lesson not to do it again.

And I do not mean this so of light... For as of my self as Teuton, you are a man of honour, I do solute you... Karl

I am a Polish Pennsylvanian, and I can tell you I am ashamed of both Specter and Murtha. What does this say about we who put them in office? Time to clean house and throw them out. I was surprised that Murtha was re-elected. Thanks a lot Philidelphia!

If they are in vote them out!
I was looking through my closet and found two pair of old size 12 work boots.. A suitable kiss goodbye for those dogs!! Thanks to my cultural awareness, I have found an Iraqi custom to adopt and assimilate into my own redneck culture.
Before I let fly I will yell "Hey, Y'all watch this!"

I am very proud of my Polish heritage but a bit removed - my grandmother was born in the US and besides making a mean pierogie did not pass down any traditions or speak Polish to her children. My maiden name is Krakowiak, which gets an enthusiastic response from Polish people, apparently it is a common name - looked it up once, there are over 200 Krakowiaks in the US, so apprently it is pretty common. That being said, wanted to share with you a bumper sticker I purchased from this website, bought it for my brother who thought it was great - I think it's funny as hell. Check it out if you get a chance - it's great to be able to laugh at ourselves and take life lightly! www.cafepress.com/PolishBumperEnjoy!

As you are Polish, very much will you find in common with the most folks here. There are a few {included that of my self} are not Polish but let us not divulged and over amount of the fun of exploration and descovery.... Again, a very good welcome on board... Your name, would you prefer to be by {Nicolelc}? Or another? Karl

Spector did issue an apology to the Polish. His office was swamped with mail from many people.
