I do not know exactly what is going on but it is hard for me to believe that Russia sanitary conditions are any better than Polish... MOSCOW, November 10 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Oversight has decided to impose temporary restrictions on Polish produce, poultry, pork and beef imports beginning November 14, the Russian Agriculture Ministry said Thursday.
This decision was made following Poland's repeated violations of Russia's phytosanitary demands, the ministry said, citing "systematic supplies of crop products with fake Polish phytosanitary certificates, such as products that had not undergone quarantine phytosanitary control."
The federal service has warned that fake certificates provide no guarantee of safety for imported products.
The service has informed Warsaw that, given the circumstances, trade will be suspended until Poland ends its violations of Russian and international phytosanitary regulations.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said Thursday that Moscow had no hidden agenda.
"The Polish side also admits to serious violations in supplies to Russia of the above-mentioned products and has proposed holding urgent negotiations in Moscow on this issue to the Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Oversight," the Foreign Ministry said.en.rian.ru/russia/20051110/42053425.html

According to Forbes: Poland seeks EU help after Russia restricts farm imports WARSAW (AFX) - Polish Prime Minister Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz said he hopes the European Union will step in and put pressure on the Russian government to lift restrictions on imports of Polish farm produce and meat. 'Up to now, the European Commission has reacted to this type of situation. We are counting on help from the Commission,' the new prime minister said on public radio. Polish Foreign Minister Stefan Meller has begun a visit to Moscow today, during which he intends to find the reasons behind the restrictions on imports of beef, pork, poultry and some other meat products, as well as some fresh vegetables from Poland. The Russian authorities have given as an explanation alleged fraudulent practices among Polish exporters, including falsification of health and hygiene certificates. In Poland, the restrictions are considered politically motivated and aimed as a test of the new conservative minority government led by Marcinkiewicz. www.forbes.com/home/feeds/afx/2005/11/14/afx2334069.html

Jaga, would this by chance, have any thing to do with Dairy Products? The reason I ask, is this: Last year, a similar situation arose over Dairy Products from Poland; would by chance this be a carry over again with the Dairy Product Bane? At that time (2004) it turned out to be a move of the Russian Government to provide protection to their domestic dairy industry against Polish imports. I could be wrong on this, but, it certainly has the appearance of a smoke screen effect again against competition with their own farm industry. www.dairyreporter.com/news/news-NG.asp?n=57706-russia-reconsiders-polishI would suspect now though, with so much investment from Western Europe into the Polish agriculture industry, the tides of fortune may be against this type of Russian smoke screen, if that is what it indeed is. It does not make the Russians bad guys, it is only their manner of doing business. Charles

Hi there
As far as I know - banning our products from exporting to Russia was of political reasons. In the matter of fact polish butchery and meat plants was inspected by russian specialist, and permissions to export meat was granted a few years ago. Now all permisions are revoked - the same situation is in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. It is a kind of revenge for not being dependent on Russia.
Since we are not belonging to Big Brother happy family any longer - we shall be punished. It has nothing to do with sanitary conditions, Jaga.

PS. May all the f***d russian authorities be sent to Siberia for lifetime vacations.

Of course, Russian ban is of political nature. They want to test the new Polish government and president, how much they can swallow.
However, Polish side does admit there were violations of export procedures. E.g. certificates were falsified by some dishonest exporters. They wrote one thing on a certificate but exported another. Russians were fed up with it, and reacted very emotionally, as usual.

well, I sure wish those Russians would clean up their INTERNET. Just about every time I query one of their web sites with an ru address, I have to run my ad-ware programme to get all those cookies out of it. Last month, I picked up two viruses off their web site, not sure which one.
Normally, I run a virus Scan once weekly and a ad-ware scan every three days or so.
Just a gripe I have today, tomorrow, maybe a complaint about the weather, never want to be totally happy, mother nature likes to have an excuse to cause some thing other wise.

Charles. I have to agree with you; it is about time the Rusians clean up their internet activity. The viruses and bugs are bad enough but ther are the thieves that are willing to clean up your bank account if given the chance. ;D

Could it be they are trying to protect and re-develop their agricultural base? It is very late to hear they are taking such steps.

There are plenty of people here who would enjoy all those yummy exports.

I Can't help it frankly. Being polish makes me dislike the Ruskis on all fronts. I was throwing stones on their soldiers when 5. It kinds of stays with you. Just to remind everybody: They lost the cold war. Their economy is the size of Holland. Their psychological need is to be considered a superpower (they are not anymore). As long as they keep electing a cop for president prefering order rather then democracy (too cheotic for Russians) they should stay in my humlbe opinion of course in their thundra.

Most Russians are good-natured people. It`s true some of them still haven`t shaken off their imperialistic desires but they are working on it. Just give them more time. I have always been interested in Russia and its culture. It is fascinating.
